Normally when I leave the house, I do a quick check to make sure I have everything I need. “Wallet, keys, phone” is my routine mantra as I head for the door. But now that we are in the thick of festival season, I’m adding a few things to that list: hat, sunglasses and sunscreen!

There’s no doubt one of the great things about living in Louisiana is the abundance of outdoor festivals this time of year. However, this jovial outdoor season also makes us particularly vulnerable to the wrath of the hot sun. And while skin cancer is not the number one killer in Louisiana, melanoma is still is one of the most common cancers out there and it’s one that we can easily prevent. So I am here to remind you to seek shade, wear hats and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen often! It’s especially important you make sure to protect your children from the sun, as childhood sun exposure greatly increases their risk of skin cancer later in life.

So go out and enjoy all that this season has to offer. Just remember to send your kids outside with hats and add a few sun protection items to your festival bags!
