Cancers

Cancer
In Louisiana

Cancer touches nearly every family in Louisiana, but it doesn’t have to define the outcome. Many cancer deaths are preventable since early action can make a real difference.

In Louisiana, too many residents are diagnosed at later stages, when treatment is more complex. Barriers such as cost, transportation, access to care, limited information, and longstanding inequities can prevent timely screening and prevention.

The good news is that early detection, prevention, and informed choices save lives. With the right support and resources, more Louisianians can access care sooner and improve their chances for a healthier future.

Our Focus

At Louisiana Cancer Prevention & Control Programs (LCP), we focus on cancers where prevention and early detection save the most lives. That includes:

  • Breast cancer
  • Cervical cancer and HPV-related cancers
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Lung cancer and tobacco-related cancers

These cancers account for a significant share of cancer deaths in Louisiana, but they’re among the most preventable and treatable when detected early.

How LCP Works To Reduce Cancer Deaths

LCP takes a comprehensive, statewide approach by focusing on both access and education. This includes removing barriers to screening and early detection, as well as supporting no-cost and low-cost screening opportunities to help more Louisianans get the right care at the right time.

Turning Information Into Prevention

In addition to promoting vaccination and other proven prevention strategies, LCP emphasizes education. Our team works with communities, healthcare providers, and policymakers to build awareness and support informed decision-making across the state. Addressing disparities that place certain populations at higher risk is also a core part of our work, ensuring efforts are equitable and responsive to community needs.

Focused On Impact

Guided by Louisiana-specific data, LCP directs resources and strategies where they’ll have the greatest impact. Through this coordinated approach, we connect residents and providers to evidence-based tools that improve early detection, prevention, and care.

Prevention Starts Before Cancer Does

Many cancers can be prevented or found early through a combination of:

  • Regular screening
  • Access to timely care
  • Vaccination (such as HPV vaccination)
  • Healthy lifestyle choices
  • Tobacco cessation

Prevention doesn’t look the same for everyone. That’s why LCP focuses on meeting people where they are and addressing the real-world challenges that affect health decisions.

Early Detection Saves Lives

For many cancers, symptoms don’t appear until later stages. Screening helps find cancer before symptoms start, when treatment is most effective.

When cancer is found early through screening, the benefits are clear:

  • Treatment is far more effective
  • Survival rates are significantly higher
  • Treatment options are often less invasive
